Why would anyone in Miramar fly out of Palm Beach International when Fort Lauderdale is 14 miles away? Fares, mostly. A few times a month we get the call: someone found a PBI nonstop $200 cheaper per seat, multiplied it by a family of four, and suddenly a 64-mile transfer is the best money they spend on the trip. Here is how that ride actually goes.

The route north

Miramar stretches long and thin across southwest Broward, so the pickup point decides the on-ramp. From the eastern end near US-441 we take the Turnpike north directly; from the newer western sections it is a short hop to I-75 and then onto the Turnpike or up to I-595 and north from there. Either way the spine of the trip is Florida’s Turnpike through Broward into Palm Beach County, then Southern Boulevard east to the airport. About 70 minutes off-peak, 90-plus in the weekday crushes. I-95 is the backup, not the default — it carries more local traffic at exactly the hours you would be on it.

A concrete departure plan

Take the case that started this page: family of four, 11:45 a.m. departure from PBI, two checked bags each. PBI is one compact terminal with Concourses A, B, and C, and it is one of the least stressful airports in Florida — 90 minutes before departure is generous even with a check-in line. For early departures the picture is friendlier than you would guess: at 5:00 a.m. the Turnpike is empty and the run drops to just over an hour.
