Every trip off Key Biscayne starts the same way: the Rickenbacker Causeway. There’s one road on and off the island, and it sets the rhythm for the whole 34-mile, 45-to-50-minute transfer to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International. Plan the causeway correctly and the rest of the trip is ordinary highway; ignore it and you’re stuck behind a cycling event at 7 a.m. wondering where your buffer went.

Causeway first, then the interstate

From the Village or the Crandon Boulevard condos, we cross the Rickenbacker, merge onto I-95 north near downtown Miami, and run straight up to the FLL exits. Simple — with caveats a local driver actually knows:

• Weekend mornings bring heavy bike and event traffic on the causeway; big rides can close lanes entirely.
• Downtown game nights and Boat Show week clog the I-95 on-ramps at exactly the hours evening flights leave.
• Weekday 7–9 a.m., northbound I-95 through downtown adds 15–20 minutes.

Key Biscayne bookings skew toward families and golf. Rough guide: a Business Sedan takes 3 passengers with 3 bags; add golf bags or a stroller and you want the SUV (6 passengers, 6 bags). The fare

Sedans from Key Biscayne to FLL start from $89, all-inclusive — causeway toll, highway tolls, fuel, driver, waiting time. The price you see at booking is the price you pay. Rideshare quotes from the island can look similar midday, but pickups out here get declined or reassigned more than mainland riders expect; drivers don’t love crossing the causeway on spec. A scheduled car with your name on it doesn’t weigh its options.

At the airport, both directions

Departures get dropped at the correct terminal by airline — Terminal 1 for Southwest and United, 2 for Delta, 3 for JetBlue and American, 4 for Spirit and most international carriers. Arrivals get flight tracking, 60 minutes of included wait after touchdown, and a driver at baggage claim with a sign. If customs at Terminal 4 runs slow, the clock is our problem, not yours.

When to leave the island

Pickup 2 hours 15 minutes before a domestic flight, 2 hours 45 before international. Add 20 minutes for weekday morning departures and any date that overlaps a downtown Miami event. Verify against the causeway calendar — or let us do it, since we already have.
